1: On October 2, 2014, the launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was announced by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, on the auspicious occasion of the 145th birth anniversary of Gandhiji.

2: This campaign is the biggest cleanliness campaign so far in terms of cleanliness. The Prime Minister appealed to all the countrymen to join this campaign.

3: The Prime Minister started this campaign on 2 October 2014 by sweeping the Valmiki Basti in Delhi. Valmiki Basti was Gandhiji’s favorite place.

Aim of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, or as the English translation says, Clean India Mission, it aims to make India clean and green.

It was launched at Raj Ghat on 2nd October 2014, on birth anniversary of Father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Modi has raised the campaign with a slogan of “One step towards cleanliness”.

SwachhBharat Abhiyaan is India’s largest drive of cleanliness till date backed with participation of 4043 communities of rural, towns and cities of India, wherein total of three million students and government employees are working for proper implementation of the drive.

The Abhiyaan is two dimensional: Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan rural or gramin, operated under the Ministry of Drinking Water and sanitation; and Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan urban, operated under Ministry of Housing and urban affairs.

Objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The main objective of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan or mission is cleaning up of the streets and infrastructure of rural and urban areas.

India is a very resourceful country, in terms of knowledge, science, creativity, and every other field. It had renowned doctors, engineers, scientists and actors. You just have to name a field, and an Indian name can be seen there standing tall and proud.

We are among one of the oldest civilizations on Earth. We have a significant religious history, scientific history and stood apart from world having a rich philosophical tradition.

Need of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Clean India Mission

India is blessed with immense talent and rich natural resources too. However, one thing which is lacking in this great nation is the sense of cleanliness. The people are ignorant towards the cleanliness of the society, town, city and country.

The roads are littered and dustbins are nowhere to be seen.

The public used to throw household garbage in the sewage resulting into blockage and foul odour. The condition got worsened in the monsoon season, when the blocked sewage system results into water logging. Open urinals of human and faeces of animals on the roadside made the situation too bad to handle.

 Open defecation is a very common practice in India, especially in rural areas. Women used to bath, wash clothes and utensils on the riverside, which makes the water polluted. There is improper disposal of garbage going on in the cities, resulting into garbage logging.

The industrial waste too contributes their part in the pollution. The cleanliness is often directly connected to the poverty.

However, both are not inter-changeable words. A poor man can preach and follow cleanliness. A house full of modern infrastructure is not eye- catchy, if it’s not clean, and a poverty-stricken house, without any amenities may bring solace to the eye, if it’s clean and tidy.

Likewise, a country with full of resources and talent; have to be clean too, in order to earn respect. A resourceful country like India has to follow cleanliness too, then only all the advantages can be seen by the world and we don’t have to face shame and ignorance.

Main Goals  and Objective of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Our honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, realised this fact and started a 5-year long campaign named as Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, main objective of which is to sport cleanliness throughout the country.

The open defecation was main area of concern and against the campaign; he targets to establish personal and public toilets in the rural and urban areas and appoints a team to look after its implementation and execution.

The drive aims to eradicate open defecation, which contaminates drinking water, by utilizing ₹1.96 lakh crore in the construction of 90 million toilets in rural areas. The central government has allocated billions of rupees for the completion of this campaign and funds were received from World Bank, state government and companies as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility.

The government has planned several incentives to make this drive successful. Apart from the basic Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Swachh Bharat SwachhVidyalaya campaign was launched too by the Minister of Human Resource Development, government of India, in which teachers and students of schools are obliged to take part in the cleanliness programme.

The toilets were established in the schools, and children were informed and educated to use toilets, instead of open defecation. The children, as are future of nation, were targeted to spread awareness as they can spread the cause and importance in their family and nearby, thus making the people aware about the importance of cleanliness for their health and for the country.

To dispose off waste from government offices, CPWD were appointed.

The Ministry of Railway contributed happily in the campaign by facilitating clean bed rolls, cleaning on demand, bio toilets, dustbin even in non AC couches etc.

The local Municipality provide garbage collection system and dustbin in all the localities and ensure about the timely and proper disposal of waste materials.

The roads and streets are cleaned on regular basis, sanitation crew was appointed too to ensure the cleanliness throughout the city. Solar powered dustbins are proposed to be installed which can send alert to the sanitation crew, when full, to arrange for the disposal.

This project will work with the help of Digital India Project.

Work Done by India Government for Clean India Mission

The making of toilets, sweeping of roads and streets, collection of garbage, transportation of garbage, disposal of waste products, establishment of dustbins, imparting education and awareness about cleanliness are major workable of this campaign. However, this is not the end.

The impact of workables was surveyed and the cities which were not up to the mark, were checked and motivated to practice cleanliness, and improve their condition.

The Quality Council of India conducts an extensive survey of sanitation across cities to check the impact and progress of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and create a competitive spirit amongst cities.

There were six parameters to evaluate the performance of cities, including, sweeping, collection, transportation, processing, and disposal of waste; free open defecation and toilets, imparting information, education and awareness and behavioural change.

Kota, a city of Rajasthan, was once scored 545 marks out of 6000 and next day, several NGOs, public and private institutions, social activists and individuals came forward and took an oath to keep their city tidy and clean.

Each year surveys were carried on and top and bottom cities on the basis of cleanliness were announced. This helps the government to keep a check on drive and foster competitive spirit among cities and encourage them to do well.

Public figures from different zones, regions and states joined their hands with Narendra Modi in order to spread the motto of campaign.

Actress Manisha Koirala, Priyanka Chopra, Cartoonist ShekharGurera, Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Actor Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev, Indian diplomat Shashi Tharoor, Politician Mridula Sinha, Former IPS Officer Kiran Bedi, Classical Dancer Sonal Mansingh are name of some of the eminent personalities involved. 

Institutions like Institute of Chattered Accountants of India and India Today were nominated too to bring this drive at another level.

Indian citizens took active participation in the campaign and came forward to support government for the country. A maker community in Chennai has made a robot named Swachh Bot to clean waste in Besant Nagar beach.

Kunwar Hai Yadav, a 106 year old lady, sold seven of her goats and built a toilet at her home with the money raised in the year of 2016. A Swachh Bharat run was organized on 2nd October 2014 in which 1500 runners took part.

All the efforts of government, public and private institutions, NGOs, and each and every citizen of India, bears fruit and shows in growing level of sanitation in surveys conducted.

The National Sanitation Coverage rose to 65% in 2017 from 38.7% in 2014. In August 2018, it further rose to 90%. By September 2019, 5.99 lakh villages, 699 districts and 35 states or Union Territories were declared open defecation free as per the survey.

The 100% door to door solid waste collection in urban wards stood at 50%. The volunteers working for the purpose in rural areas rose to more than one lakh. The separate toilet facilities for girls in school rose from 37% to 91%.

These impacts are countable; however, the impact on thebehavioural change can’t be counted. The people are now not ignorant with the cleanliness.

They know the importance of cleanliness on their health and their family’s health and are aware to the fact that making the house clean is not sufficient.

Citizens of India are now aware about the health hazards due to unclean environment and hence, are giving more value to the sanitation.

The tenure of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan ended in the year 2019, but its impacts can still be seen and people are getting benefitted even now. Our country is now not only resourceful, but gaining respect and pride too because of cleanliness and a successful campaign.
