Essay on India Gate in English 500 Words For Students: All India War Memorial or India Gate is a war memorial located on the east of ceremonial axis of New Delhi, on Rajpath. It was built as a memorial to 7000 British Indian Army who died at the time of first world war. A structure known as “Amar Jawan” was built beneath the Archway after the Bangladesh Liberation war, 1972.

History

Under the British rule, a commission known as Imperial War Graves Commission was established in in order to build memorials for the soldiers died in the First World War. India gate was part of the work of this commission. On 10th February 1921, the foundation stone of the gate was established by several dignitaries of British rule including the men of Imperial commission and Viceroy.

The Viceroy termed the India Gate as a place where heroism will sustain. The structure, then known as All India War Memorial, was inaugurated by Lord Irwin on 12th February 1931, ten years after establishing the foundation. The gate is the symbol of sacrifice, pride and service. It gets illuminated every evening for 2.5 hours and is amajor tourist attractions of today’s New Delhi. The Republic Day parade, initiated from Rastrapati Bhavan, crosses from the India Gate and is a common spot for civil protests. In Leicester, England, India Gate was twinned with a war memorial, known as Arch of Remembrance, in the year of 2017.

Design and Structure

Sir Edwin Lutyens was designer, main architect and one of the members of I.W.G.C. The India gate is known as “ creative reworking of the Arc de Triomphe” lies in the eastern axial of Rajpath. The gate is 42-metre tall and stands on a base of Bharatpur stone. It rises to huge moulding in stages. The top has shallow dome like structure, the intention of which was to fill it with burning oil on anniversaries. It covers area of approximately 306,000 square meter.

Both sides of the arch is inscribed with India and name of 13218 war dead is inscribed on the gate. The inscription was written for the Indian Army member, who got martyred in the several war including Afgan and 1st world war.

About 150 meter east of the gate, a 73 feet canopy was built by Lutyens with a chhaja, which was inspired by a pavillion of 6th century from Mahabalipuram. It was built as a tribute to deceased King George V, and 70 foot tall statue of deceased King was covered by this canopy. However, due to the mass opposition during a d after independence of India, the statue was removed and placed in the storage.

Amar Jawan Jyoti and National War Memorial

In the memory of martyred soldiers in the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, Amar Jawan Jyoti was inaugurated by then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi on the Republic Day of 1972. It is a structure constructed of marble plinth of black colour, erected under the India gate, with reversed L1A1 Self-loading rifle, capped by war helmet. It is then bound by four urns, each is donned with the permanent light from compressed natural gas flames. This tomb of unknown Soldiers are backed with Indian armed forces round the clock. On every Republic Day, Infantry Day and Vijay Diwas, the Prime Minister of India and the Chiefs of the Armed Forces, place Wreaths at the Amar Jawan Jyoti.

In 2014, the Government of India decided to built a National War Memorial along with National War Museum around the canopy and in the adjoining par respectively. The building up of former was completed in the year of 2019.

The India Gate was often compared with the Gateway of India, Mumbai, and Arc De Triomphe in Paris However, the Gate has its own emotional quotient and value. It is one structure which affects patriotism of a citizen.
