Major Dhyan Chand Essay in English| Essay on Major Dhyan Chand: Major Dhyan Chand was born on 29th August 1905 in today’s state of Allahabad. Major Dhyan Chand was regarded as one of the greatest Indian hockey player in the history of the sport. Major Dhyan Chand has extraordinary goal-scoring features and is known as Magician or Wizard of Hockey.

Because of him, India dominated in the field hockey, as he contributed in earning of three Olympic gold medals, in 1928, 1932 and 1936. Major Dhyan Chand played internationally from the year 1926 to 1949, and scored 570 goals in 185 matches.

Major Dhyan Chand was awarded with Padma Bhusan in 1956 and every year his birthday is celebrated as National Sports Day in India. Major Dhyan Chand was honoured at India’s National Stadium with the inauguration of Dhyan Chand Tournament.

Major Dhyan Chand worked in the Indian Army and retired as lieutenant after 34 years of service. Later on, Major Dhyan Chand worked as Chief Hockey Coach at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala and he died because of Liver Cancer in AIIMS on 3 rd December 1979. Major Dhyan Chand was honored with various awards even after his death and there are abundant legacies in his name.

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award

Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award was formally known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and is highest award for sport personnel. It is awarded by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports since 1991-92 for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports over a period of four years in International events and the award got its name from the outstanding and greatest hockey player of India, Major Dhyan Chand.

Nomination and Selection Process

 The nominations were provided by the Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federations, the Sports Promotion and Control Boards, the Sports Authority of India, and the state and the union territory governments with maximum of two sportspersons for each sports discipline. These nominations for a year are accepted till 30 April.

A committee comprises of the Director/Deputy Secretary and the Joint Secretary of Department of Sports, and the Secretary and the Executive Director of Sports Authority of India verify and validate the nominations. Then, the same are considered by board of trustees, who chooses the recipient. The selection committee is constituted by Government of India.

The medals won in different International championship, and occasions of the discipline which includes Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games have 70% weightage. The remaining 30% goes to the contributions made towards promotion of sports after the retirement of candidate from an active sports career.

For a given discipline, maximum of two sportspersons, i.e., one male and one female are given highest marks. The committee can only recommend the award to the recipient of the highest aggregate marks in particular sports and may not recommend the sportsperson with the highest marks across several disciplines.

The recommendations of the selection committee appointed by Government of India are submitted to the Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports for further approval. The award is conferred to the selected sportsperson by the President of India and the sportsperson gets award along with cash prize of Rs.10 lakh, which is revised in the year 2020.

Recipients

First winners of this award are Shahuraj Birajdar for Boxing, Ashok Diwan for Hockey and Aparna Ghosh for Badminton. Then after, more than 70 sportsperson received the award including Ram Kumar for Basketball, Hardayal Singh for Hockey, Rajinder Singh for Wrestling, Anita Chanu for Weight lifting, Shabbir Ali for Football, Mary D’Souza Sequeira for Athletic, Satya Prakash Tiwari for Para Badminton. The last award till date was conferred to 15 sportsperson in the year 2020.

 The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award is conferred to the sportsperson for lifetime achievement in games and sports and is highest honoured sports award in India for contribution in National and International levels during active career and post retire.
